Planar Tension Catalyst Attunement
The process required to safely operate a Planar Tension Catalyst, involving the permanent synchronization of the user's biological Eidos Interface with the artifact's planar geometry.
A Deus-forged Catalyst aligns only with compatible physiological and cognitive signatures. The process is gradual, largely irreversible without severe trauma, and fundamentally alters both the user and the artifact.
The First Contact
Physical or mental contact triggers a silent diagnostic pulse. The Catalyst scans for baseline compatibility markers:
-
Neural architecture (synaptic density, cognitive plasticity)
-
Eidos-plane connectivity (Node connection strength, data-I/O tolerance)
-
Intent stability (consistency of focus, emotional volatility, willpower coherence)
|
Result |
Manifestation |
Simplicity |
|---|---|---|
|
Rejection |
Catalyst remains inert; may emit a dampening field or mild cognitive repulsion |
User cannot activate it without external forcing (high risk) |
|
Tolerance |
Flickering activation; unstable rifts; rapid mental fatigue |
Temporary use possible, but prone to feedback or collapse |
|
Resonance |
Sustained low-level hum; intuitive interface recognition; Tenax begins to flow |
Bond initiates; progression path unlocks |
Note: Some Catalysts remain dormant for decades until a compatible bearer approaches. Others emit subtle planar ripples that draw compatible users unconsciously.
Interface Lock-In
Once Resonance confirms, the Catalyst synchronizes to the user's native interface architecture. This lock is permanent unless severed.
The user must internalize the Catalyst's spatial and energetic "geometry" through meditation, trauma, or ritual mapping. The artifact projects phantom structures into the user's mind until neural pathways adapt. This can manifest as synaptic warmth, dream-visions of shifting planes, intuitive rift-shaping, or high cognitive loads.
Rule: A Catalyst bonds to one interface per lifetime. Switching requires full severance and re-bonding, which is rare, dangerous, and often fatal to the operator.
Progression Tiers
Attunement deepens through sustained use, mental adaptation, and Tenax flow conditioning.
|
Tier |
Duration |
Capabilities |
Risks / Side Effects |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Surface Link |
DaysâWeeks |
Basic activation, low capacity, manual rift parameter setting |
High strain, unstable output, and highly inefficient Tenax usage. |
|
Harmonic Resonance |
MonthsâYears |
Stable rift control, efficient Tenax draw, safe use of replaceable storages, reduced casting errors |
Mild neural adaptation, emotional dampening, interface dependency. |
|
Symbiotic Alignment |
DecadesâLifetime |
Near-zero latency, intuitive multi-rift coordination, passive ambient Tenax siphon, advanced parameter modulation |
Ontological drift: perception shifts, physiological crystallization, loss of non-magical senses, weakening of non-interface Eidos interactions. |
Many masters intentionally halt at Tier 2 (Harmonic Resonance) to preserve mortality, emotional range, or physical autonomy. Pushing to Tier 3 (Symbiotic Alignment) is revered, feared, or forbidden depending on the culture.
Severance & Succession
Attunement can be undone either by force or by will.
|
Type |
Process |
Aftermath |
|---|---|---|
|
Voluntary Severance |
Ritual disengagement using Eidos interfacing or interface unbinding sequences |
Catalyst enters a dormant state; user experiences "phantom limb" Tenax hunger and interface echoes for weeks or months. |
|
Traumatic Severance |
Death, psychic shock, forced extraction, or catastrophic overload |
Catalyst may lock, develop corruption traces, or emit chaotic Ergo bleed; user often suffers synaptic scarring or Eidos fragmentation. |
|
Succession Transfer |
New bearer bonds after dormancy or forced reset |
Catalyst may carry faint memory echoes, skill inheritance, or psychological interference from prior users. |
Cultural Variants:
-
Purist Guilds: Use Eidos-cleansing rituals to strip previous imprints before re-bonding.
-
Ancestral Orders: Preserve and study imprints as "lineage guides," accepting psychological bleed as a feature.
-
Black Markets: "Resonance thieves" use illegal Eidos-hacks to temporarily hijack bonds, degrading Catalyst integrity over time.
Risks & Failure States
|
Phenomenon |
Trigger |
Consequence |
|---|---|---|
|
Overbonding |
Forcing Tier 3 progression, repeated Tenax starvation, or Eidos-amplification drugs |
Neural crystallization, reality fragmentation perception, Tenax addiction, emotional atrophy. |
|
Rejection Cascade |
Forced bonding, incompatible interface hacking, or traumatic plane bleed |
Localized Ergo dead zones, temporary rift collapse, psychic feedback loops, Catalyst dormancy. |
|
Deus Imprint Activation |
Deep symbiosis, exposure to ancient Catalyst cores, or specific plane alignments |
Cryptic visions, compulsive geometric/linguistic patterns, ontological drift. User begins to perceive and act in ways others cannot, hearing and seeing things beyond normal perception. |
Deus Imprints are resonance echoes, often interpreted as prophecy, madness, or engineering data, depending entirely on the culture and the user.
