📖Keystone Pennon

The Keystone Pennon (colloquially known as the Blood-Spike or the Crimson Fang) is the battlefield standard carried by the Shakor legions of the Tarosian Empire. While the square Standard of Sacred Arch represents the peacetime geometry of the Three Pillars, the Keystone Pennon signifies the suspension of civil order and the activation of the Verse of the Whetstone. It is a visual declaration that the Pillar of Order has transitioned from a defensive wall to an offensive blade.

Visual Design and Geometry

The pennon abandons the serene, equilateral geometry of the state banner in favor of an aggressive, elongated downward-pointing swallowtail. The top edge is split into two sharp, asymmetrical points, allowing the fabric to snap violently in the wind, while the bottom tapers to a needle-sharp point. The shape mimics both a spearhead and the fang of a predatory beast.

The field of the pennon is dyed in a deep, vibrant Arterial Crimson. In Tarosian theology, red is not a caste color, but a state of being. It represents the Crucible of the Arm, the divine wrath of the Architect, and the blood spilled to hone the blade of the Arch. The transition from the peacetime Abyssal Blue-Black to wartime Crimson signals to both the citizen and the enemy that the sacred geometry has been weaponized.

Running down the exact center of the crimson field is a thick, tapering wedge of Abyssal Blue-Black, representing the Shakor caste. At the very top, where the two swallowtail points converge, sits a solid Pale Gold and Platinum diamond (the Keystone).

The visual narrative of the charge is a single, cohesive strike: the Golden Keystone (the Crown) is driving the Abyssal Spike (the Shakor) downward through the Crimson (the blood of the enemy). It is a geometric representation of a spear thrust.

Material and Dye Sources

The production of the Crimson field is a massive logistical undertaking, serving as a psychological flex of the Empire's wealth.

  • Arterial Crimson: The dye is derived from Kermes, a parasitic scale insect harvested from the oak forests of Central Arial. The insects are crushed and boiled to produce a brilliant, unfading carminic acid. For the rank-and-file garrisons, the state utilizes a highly concentrated, iron-mordanted madder root bath, yielding a darker, "dried blood" hue that is highly colorfast and resistant to fading in the sun.

  • Blackened Iron and Leather: Unlike the peacetime standard, which is bound in Oxidized Bronze, the edges of the pennon are bound in blackened, hardened leather or small, blackened iron rings.

  • The Weighted Tip: The bottom point of the pennon is weighted with a small, sharpened iron spike or a polished, hollowed Shakor claw-bone. This ensures the pennon always flies perfectly vertical and true, even in a dead calm, and adds a macabre, tactile element to the standard.

Psychological and Tactical Function

The Keystone Pennon is designed to induce immediate psychological distress in enemy forces. The sudden appearance of the Crimson Fang on the horizon signals that the Tarosian army is no longer operating under the constraints of civil law or the Verse of the Sacred Thread, which forbids pure-blooded kor from killing one another.

  • For the Shakor: The crimson field serves as a psychological trigger, shifting their mindset from the rigid, patient containment of the peacetime garrison to the hyper-metabolic, lethal aggression of the Crucible. It is a visual reminder that they are the "Arm" unleashed.

  • For the Enemy: The sheer volume of crimson fabric, combined with the aggressive, downward-pointing geometry, communicates an overwhelming commitment of force. It tells the enemy that the Tarosian state has spared no expense and is entirely focused on their annihilation.

The "Severed Thread" Variant

In cases where a Shakor warband is deployed on a deniable, extralegal operation by the Tarosian Secret Chancery, they carry a modified variant known as the Severed Thread. This pennon features the exact same swallowtail shape and crimson field, but the central Abyssal Spike is deliberately "fractured" or jagged, and the Golden Keystone is omitted. This signifies that the unit is operating outside the direct, public mandate of the Kayros, serving as a silent warning to any Outskirter or noble who witnesses it that the rules of the Arch no longer apply.
