Arcane magic is based upon using energy from the Arcane Plane using Mana for it.
To use it a mage needs to create one or more rifts to or from one of the subplanes of the Arcane Plane and keep it for the needed time. The energy from the subplanes can seem simple but with enough imagination possibilities are almost unlimited, well only by abilities of the caster to create and manipulate the rifts. Creation of rifts requires special energy that can cut through them - Mana and special devices/organs - Mana Catalysts.

Characteristic |
Effect |
|---|---|
|
Subplane |
Obviously first you need to choose the energy to use (subplane). |
|
Position |
It's simple: where the rift takes place in the dimension. |
|
Shape and size |
Rifts can take both any convex and any flat shapes, almost any size but the bigger the more energy to keep them is needed. |
|
Direction |
Defines where the energy is directed at |
|
Emit&Absorb |
Rifts can be directed IN or OUT the subplane so it is also must be known. |
|
Connection Power |
Rifts can never truly reach the subplane, only partly and this defines how much it is. So for example from the Therme Subplane you can get a slight heat that could make someone sweat or the one that will make them burn keeping all other characteristics the same like a shape and so on. |
Mixing
All variations of those characteristics and their combinations with other rifts and their variations can do much almost everything limited only by magic knowledge, catalyst and user imagination.
Subplane Limitations
Most of catalysts have limitations on the Arcane subplanes it can use, but some very rare are unlimited allowing to grasp full potential of all of the subplanes.
