📖Foothill Transshipment Hubs

Tarosian Foothill Transshipment Hubs

The Tarosian Foothill Transshipment Hubs (also referred to as Foothill Ports) are critical logistical, economic, and military chokepoints located along the Radial River Network at the 500m–1000m elevation mark surrounding Ark's Peak. Due to the steep topography of Central Arial, river navigation ceases at this elevation. These hubs serve as the mandatory transition zones where bulk continental trade shifts from riverine transport to overland caravan routes.

Geographical and Logistical Context

The geography of Central Arial dictates the flow of the continent's lifeblood. Massive glacial melt from the summit of Ark's Peak feeds a radial network of rivers flowing outward to the edges of the continent and the Drake Sea. Downstream transport of agricultural surplus and crafted goods is swift and cost-effective. Moving bulk goods upstream presents a significant physical challenge.

At the Foothill Transshipment Hubs, river cargo is offloaded from barges and transferred to Shakor-escorted ox-cart caravans for the final, steep ascent to the capital city of Arch. The rivers are flanked by wide, paved roads known as the Royal Towpaths. Upstream barges are hauled by teams of oxen or chained gangs of Garont laborers and sord haulers walking the banks.

The Toll Economy and Centralized Control

The radial nature of the river network ensures all bulk trade flows through the Crown's territory. The Tarosian Kingdom leverages this hydrology to enforce absolute logistical dominance. The state constructed fortified Shakor checkpoints and Ikor toll-houses at every major river confluence within the hubs.

All significant quantities of grain, metal, and goods entering or leaving the heartland are taxed, inspected, and logged. This absolute control over the waterways allows the Crown to enforce the standardized 5g currency and suppress regional autonomy.

Military Garrison and Strategic Dispersion

To secure the border and prevent smuggling, the Ikor magistrates disperse Shakor legions across the continent to guard every Foothill Transshipment Hub, bridge, and checkpoint. This deployment strategy achieves multiple strategic objectives simultaneously:

  • It keeps the Shakor physically separated from each other and from the political center of Arch, neutralizing the risk of a unified military coup.

  • It provides the legions with a clear external enemy in the form of smugglers, bandits, and heretics.

  • It prevents the accumulation of unified military power that might threaten the Ikor oligarchy.

Along the western and southern peripheries, these hubs also serve as forward operating bases for the "Wardens of the Wastes" patrolling the Line of Purity.

Propaganda and Statecraft

The hubs serve as the theatrical backdrop for the Rightful Tribute. Grand processions of Deserian metal and sord slave caravans arriving at these ports are staged as massive public spectacles. This visual framing reinforces the public illusion of total Tarosian dominance and the groveling submission of the Arial Outskirts. The spectacle obscures the underlying reality of the illicit Silent Trade managed by the Tarosian Secret Chancery.

The Secret Chancery's Shadow Logistics

The tight logistical control exerted at the Foothill Transshipment Hubs makes the Silent Trade with Deseria highly dangerous. Smuggling raw, untaxed metal upstream against the current requires bypassing multiple Shakor river-forts. The Tarosian Secret Chancery relies on forged toll manifests, bribed harbor masters, and barges disguised as "royal agricultural exports" to move Deserian ore up the rivers and avoid triggering an economic or religious crisis.

The hubs also function as staging grounds for classified containment operations. During the Ashen Sovereign Incident, specialized containment infrastructure and high-capacity Planar Tension Catalysts were requisitioned, disassembled, and transported through these hubs under false pretenses of border defense research.
