A race of sentient lizard like humanoids, supposedly created by Saris.
Appearance and Anatomy
The peculiarities of the species make them come through 2 phases described below.
Drake
300-500 years
When born dragons do not look so much different to other drakes, the only big difference would be the wings.
-
Height: In the middle of their drake phase their height from toes to the tip of the head can reach from 3 to 7 meters depending on their physiology features.
-
Wings: Leathery wings half of their height in size. They seem to be useless for flying physically but actually allow them to. See the #Flying.
-
Lifespan: dragons can live indefinitely and even keep growing, though this trait becomes dangerous because of the draconic demention.
Dragon
All time after the Drake phase
When a Drake reaches the end of its 300-500 year maturation period, it undergoes a radical physiological metamorphosis known as the "Awakening".
-
Size and Growth: The body rapidly expands, often doubling or tripling in mass over a few weeks. Their height can exceed the 7 meters easily at 1000 years growing their wingspan to the point it becomes massive enough to cast shadows over entire villages.
-
Cognitive Shift: The brain undergoes a final structural expansion. The parietal "third eye" fully opens, granting them a passive, low-level connection to the Eidos plane. This is what allows them to process the immense magical energies they are about to channel.
-
The Curse of Longevity: While they are now biologically immortal, their brain capacity is finally maxed out. From this point on, they are highly susceptible to draconic demention. Many ancient Dragons retreat to isolated peaks or deep caverns to meditate, intentionally limiting their sensory input to stave off madness.
Flying
Dragon's leathery wings act as massive biological Planar Catalysts to allow those otherwise massive creatures to fly.
By drawing Tenax from their internal reserves, the wings open micro-PTRs to the Kinet subplane. This creates a localized anti-gravity like and kinetic thrust effect, allowing a creature of such impossible mass to move with terrifying speed and agility. To an observer, it looks like the air around their wings is shimmering and distorting.
Ergo Breathing
A Dragon's "breath is a localized, directed PTR.
Inside the Dragon's throat and jaw lies a cluster of organic tissue that acts as a natural Planar Catalyst. When the Dragon exhales, it forces a massive, momentary rift to a specific Ergo subplane:
-
Therme Rift: Results in a devastating cone of superheated fire or absolute zero frost.
-
Electra Rift: Results in a blinding, continuous arc of lightning.
-
Kinet Rift: Results in a concussive shockwave that can pulverize stone.
The breathing is done mostly through an instinct and intuition, at least it's how the dragons see it. They have a separate part of brain that does most of the processing needed to apply the catalysis, so they can do it even right after birth.
Character Tendencies
-
Pride and Isolation: Having lived for centuries and possessing god-like power, Dragons often view shorter-lived races as fleeting mayflies. They rarely form lasting attachments outside of their own kind.
-
Hoarding of Knowledge: While they may hoard gold or gems, their true hoards are often artifacts, books, and Planar Catalysts. Their long memories make them the ultimate historians of Lacon.
Draconic Demention
A phenomenon, a mind condition related to all the long living races with limited brain capacity but brought up first by the dragons as they show it the brightest.
As the long liver reaches their brain's max capacity their consciousness starts to fade away because of memory rewriting that starts to happening, decaying and leaving only the strongest of memories that they get fixated on: those can be greed, violence, hatred or obsessive crave to protect something or someone.
The point of no-return highly depends on physical condition of subject, specifically their brain. The more information they consume over time the faster it happens. It made some of them to implement some techniques like meditation and information consuming limitations to prolong the life of their sentience.
