The oldest known Flesh Engineer, responsible for the creation of the dragons and the establishment of the base biological template from which all subsequent Vir races were derived.
Temperament
Saris is characterized by patience, detachment and methodical observation. Among the three known Flesh Engineers, he shows no drive toward imposition or control. He shared his foundational blueprints with the other Engineers freely and without conditions, seeking no authority over how the template would be applied.
The Base Template
Saris was the first Flesh Engineer active on Vir. Before Ark shaped the kor and Ghobthul engineered the gobi, Saris established the foundational genetic architecture used by all subsequent creations.
The Draconic chromosome (D) represents this ancestral template. All other known race chromosomes (I, Sh, G, Go) were derived from it through modification by later Engineers. This shared ancestry is the reason all races in Vir can interbreed.
The Inheritance

Ark received the base template and derived the Ikoric (I), Shakoric (Sh) and Garontic (G) chromosomes from it, producing the kor races.

Ghobthul received the base template and derived the Gobic (Go) chromosome from it, producing the gobi extinction vector.
Saris offered these blueprints without conditions or restrictions. The application of the template by later Engineers was entirely their own decision.
The Dragon as Observation Platform
Saris designed the dragon as a comprehensive sensory instrument for environmental monitoring. Each dragon biological feature serves an observational function:

The First Dragon
Saris adopted the dragon form as his primary shape. Ancient dragon accounts describe a figure matching his profile: larger than any living specimen, perfectly still, with all sensory organs active. These accounts form the origin of the "First Dragon" mythology present in Laconian oral tradition.
Due to draconic demention, most dragons living past 2000 years retain only fragmentary memories of encountering Saris. Those who retain the memory rarely discuss it.
Shapeshifting
As a Flesh Engineer, Saris can rewrite his own DNA and alter his physical form. He regularly compresses his mass and reshapes his biology to adopt the forms of Drakai, Dragar, Garont, Ikor and other sapient races for the purpose of close-range observation.
Origin of the Transformation Myth
Saris's millennia of shapeshifting among mortal populations produced the widespread myth that dragons can transform into humanoid races. Recorded encounters with disguised Saris across both Lacon and Arial over hundreds of thousands of years form the basis of these stories.
The Soul Pearl Anomaly
During shapeshifting, Saris's Soul Pearl remains constant regardless of external form. It is typically concealed within the chest cavity or disguised as an unremarkable gemstone. On rare occasions, a disguised Saris has been killed by bandits, predators or inquisitors. In such cases, the corpse displays an indestructible pearl where a heart should be, surrounded by rapidly dissolving tissue reverting toward the base draconic template. These incidents reinforce the mortal belief in dragon-to-humanoid transformation.
The Cold-Blooded Design
Saris designed the dragons as cold-blooded because Lacon's climate provides sufficient ambient heat for their metabolic needs. Internal thermoregulation would divert energy away from cognition, sensory processing and memory storage.
This design choice indicates that Lacon's climate has been consistently warm since the time of Saris's work. Unlike Northern Arial, Lacon does not suffer from the thermal rifts created by the Virian Cataclysm.
The mixed drakes (Drakash, Dragar, Drakai) inherited cold-blooded physiology from the base template. When they settle in cooler regions of Arial, they compensate through behavioral adaptation: basking, nesting near geothermal vents, sleeping near hearths.
Current Status
Saris resides on Lacon in his true draconic form. His "obsessive idea" manifests as a drive to catalogue all variations that have emerged from the base template across all races, cultures and environments.
He conducts field research by adopting mortal forms and observing societies from within. He does not intervene in the affairs of the races he observes. He records data and continues observation.
