📖Tripartite Citadel

Tripartite Citadel

The Tripartite Citadel is a 90-meter-tall triangular prism fortress located in the temperate foothills of Ark's Peak, approximately 600 meters above sea level, within the capital city of Arch. The structure is built directly upon an exposed shelf of Deusit bedrock that forms part of the Sun-Spire's foundational root network. The Citadel was constructed as the Primary Control Citadel for the Sun-Spire Mega Planar Tension Catalyst, with the Spire's 300-meter column rising through the building's Central Atrium.

Originally built millennia before the Tarosian Kingdom by the early kor races under the supervision of the morphogen Ark, the edifice was rediscovered following the Virian Cataclysm and co-opted by Kayros and the Varros Clan, who repurposed the ancient control facility into the physical and political heart of the emerging state.

Origin and Nature

Pre-Cataclysmic Construction

The Citadel predates the Tarosian Kingdom by thousands of years. The structure was engineered as the operational nexus for the Sun-Spire. To house the three specialized biological components required to operate the Mega Catalyst, the early kor races, guided by Ark's geometric calculations, quarried and stacked millions of tons of white granite and bronze-reinforced masonry around the exposed Deusit foundation shelf.

The building's triangular design was structured to separate and support the distinct operational tiers:

  • The Ikor processed Noematic data and maintained the Resonance Choir synchronization in the upper tiers.

  • The Shakor enforced physical security and prevented unauthorized access in the mid-levels.

  • The Garont maintained the subterranean infrastructure and managed logistical support at the base.

The sacred texts of the Rightful Path — particularly the Verse of the Three Pillars — are believed by AIR researchers to be mythologized remnants of the original Standard Operating Procedure for operating this building and the Sun-Spire.

The Deusit Bedrock Foundation

The Citadel is built directly upon an exposed shelf of Deusit bedrock jutting from the lower slopes of Ark's Peak at approximately 600 meters elevation. This extrusion of the Deusit root system is part of the same network that anchors the Sun-Spire directly into the continental tectonic plates.

The pre-Cataclysmic builders layered their stone architecture directly on top of the Deusit shelf. This foundation explains the Citadel's survival through the Virian Cataclysm. When the Eidos shockwave shattered the outskirts and caused massive planar shearing across the continent, the kinetic and dimensional stress was channeled down through the mortal stone walls and dispersed into the Deusit bedrock.

In the deepest subterranean levels, the floor of the Garont maintenance chambers is a seamless expanse of Deusit that disappears into the bedrock. The material is cold to the touch and impervious to pickaxes.

Post-Cataclysmic Co-optation

During the Arial Tribal Unification (799AC - 836AC), Kayros and the Varros Clan discovered the dormant Citadel. Possessing the highest concentration of surviving Catalysts, they were the only faction capable of partially reactivating the building's dormant systems.

Kayros claimed the Citadel was a divine gift from Ark, bestowed upon the "pure" Varros bloodline to guide the survivors. The Tarosians repurposed the pre-Cataclysmic operational hub into a feudal capital and administrative fortress.

Architecture

The Citadel is a triangular prism — a wedge shape rising vertically from a triangular base. Its three faces of white granite and bronze-reinforced masonry meet at a razor-sharp apex that points toward the frozen summit of Ark's Peak. The structure stands 90 meters tall, divided into 18 floors.

Structural Engineering

The structural integrity is ensured by:

  • The Deusit Bedrock Foundation: The shelf bears the entire weight of the structure without compression or settlement.

  • Garont Mastery: Generations of Garont laborers quarried, carved, and stacked the white granite blocks.

  • Ikor Geometric Calculation: Ikor geometers calculated the load-bearing angles, stress points, and kinetic deflection vectors.

  • Catalyst-Assisted Construction: Pre-Cataclysmic records suggest that Kinet and Therme catalysis was used to move massive stone blocks and fuse joints.

Dimensional Geometry and Mass

The structure stands 90 meters in height, with a base width of 120 meters and a depth of 80 meters from the razor-sharp leading edge to the rear face. The granite blocks are bound by thick oxidized bronze trim acting as a tensile skeleton.

At the latitude of the Arch, the 120-meter width and 90-meter height ensure that the Citadel casts a triangular shadow across the Proclamation Plaza during morning hours.

Interior Layout: Ramps and Lifts

The core of the triangular prism houses wide, shallow-gradient ramps carved from white stone. These ramps allow Garont haulers to pull supply carts and Shakor in full plate armor to march upward.

For high-priority personnel or urgent messages between the upper tiers, the Citadel employs massive, counterweighted freight elevators in the central shaft, operated by Garont crews. Certain critical vertical routes are served by minor, permanently attuned Kinet apertures maintained by a rotating shift of low-tier Ikor apprentices.

The Central Atrium and Sun-Spire Integration

The most critical architectural feature is the Central Atrium — a hollow, triangular shaft that runs vertically through the exact center of the Citadel, from the roof down to the Foundation level. The Sun-Spire rises through this atrium.

The Sun-Spire takes the form of a perfect cylinder of solid Deusit that rises 300 meters from the foundational bedrock shelf, maintaining a radius of 15 meters (30 meters in diameter). The Citadel was constructed around this column. Because the Spire extends 300 meters into the sky and the Citadel reaches 90 meters, the Deusit needle towers 210 meters above the highest apex of the mortal fortress.

The interior balconies, ramps, and chambers are built in concentric, triangular tiers wrapping around the Spire's casing. The atrium allows natural light from the roof and clerestory windows to penetrate deep into the building's core. The shaft acts as a natural chimney, drawing stale air upward and out through vents in the roof. The internal balconies surrounding the atrium allow Shakor guards to rapidly deploy to any floor.

Floor Distribution

At approximately 4.5 to 5 meters per floor, the Citadel contains 18 to 20 floors, distributed across three tiers:

The Foundation (0 to 30 meters — Floors 1 to 6)

The base of the prism is the widest section. The walls slope outward at a severe angle. This tier serves as the judicial and administrative hub.

  • Lower Ikor Magistrates: Judges resolving disputes between noble houses, trade disagreements, property claims, and public legal matters.

  • Shakor Guards and Bailiffs: Elite honor guards protecting the magistrates and enforcing courtroom order.

  • Garont Support: Scribes, record-keepers, and maintenance crews.

The Mid-Section (30 to 70 meters — Floors 7 to 14)

The walls taper inward, creating a narrower footprint. This section features reinforced balconies, overlapping firing slits, and heavily warded chambers.

  • Senior Ikor Magistrates: Higher-tier judges handling classified disputes and cases involving the Tarosian Secret Chancery.

  • Secret Chancery Operatives: Personnel who plan deniable operations and process Outskirter mercenary contracts.

  • Shakor Enforcers: The "Thread-Cutters" and internal affairs operatives.

  • Classified Archives: Restricted libraries containing treaties and shadow-agreements.

The Apex (70 to 90 meters — Floors 15 to 18)

The prism narrows to a sharp point. The exterior is smooth, seamless white stone, devoid of windows or easy handholds.

  • The Archonate: The supreme ruling council of the Empire, comprising the inner circle of the Varros Clan and highest Ikor magistrates.

  • The Prime Anchor's Chambers: Living quarters and synchronization chambers for the Prime Anchor of the Sun-Spire.

  • The Kayros's Throne: The physical seat of the Kayros (or the White Crown's current host).

Windows, Light, and Ventilation

Vertical Light Slits

The three sloping faces are pierced by hundreds of narrow vertical light slits, each calculated by Ikor geometers. These slits are typically 2-3 meters tall but only 15-25 centimeters wide at the exterior face, widening inward in a splayed angle.

Each slit is covered with a heavy, removable bronze grate featuring geometric lattice patterns. The slits are positioned at regular intervals along each floor, creating a rhythmic pattern of thin light blades.

Clerestory Windows

The upper floors, particularly the Apex levels (Floors 15-18), feature clerestory windows — windows set high in the walls, above eye level, often near the ceiling. These windows are larger and more numerous than the vertical slits on lower floors.

The Voice of the Arch Doorway

The arched doorway behind the proclamation balcony serves as a light source for the interior corridor on the 6th floor.

Atmospheric Effects

The Citadel's lighting design creates distinct atmospheric zones:

  • The Foundation (Floors 1-6): Dimmer, with light arriving in thin, intermittent blades through the narrow slits.

  • The Mid-Section (Floors 7-14): Moderate lighting, with more frequent slits and some light filtering down from the Central Atrium.

  • The Apex (Floors 15-18): Bright, flooded with light from clerestory windows and the upper reaches of the Central Atrium.

The Voice of the Arch (Proclamation Balcony)

Projecting from the sharp, outward-facing angle of the triangular prism at the transition between the Foundation and the Mid-Section (approximately the 6th floor, 30 meters above the plaza) is a balcony. Known formally as the Voice of the Arch, this structure serves as the primary stage for state proclamations, the announcement of the Rightful Tribute, and public sentencing.

Architectural and Acoustic Engineering

The balcony is positioned at the literal point of the triangle. The two sloping faces of the white granite prism act as natural sound baffles. Ikor geometers engineered the balcony's underside and the arched doorway behind the speaker with precise, shallow curves utilizing subtle Sonica and Barica planar geometries. This acoustic shaping allows a single, unamplified voice to carry across the entire plaza.

Visual Impact

There is no railing. The speaker stands at the apex of the Empire's geometry, facing a ninety-meter drop to the cobblestones below. When occupied, the speaker is flanked by two Shakor honor guards standing in the deep shadows of the arched doorway.

Nomenclature

  • The Voice of the Arch: The formal, doctrinal title.

  • The Proclamation Ledge: The pragmatic term used by Shakor guards.

  • The Spear-Point: A colloquial, martial term.

Defensive Properties

From a military engineering standpoint, the wedge shape is difficult to besiege:

  • Deflection of Force: The angled, sloping walls naturally deflect the kinetic energy of siege weaponry upward or sideways.

  • The Funnel Effect: If an enemy army attacks the point of the wedge, the shape splits the attacking force, funneling them along the two long flanks.

  • No Blind Spots: A three-sided structure allows defenders to cover every angle of approach.

  • The Deusit Anchor: The foundation cannot be undermined, tunneled beneath, or structurally compromised.
